After a prolonged transfer saga that lasted over 18 months, Jadon Sancho finally completed his move to Manchester United in 2021.
Sancho initially came through Manchester City’s academy before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for a fee reported to be in the region of £8million.
The winger established himself as a first-team regular in the 2018-19 season and then developed into one of Europe’s most exciting young players.
He became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top transfer target in the summer of 2020 but United refused to meet Dortmund’s £108million asking price.
After the deal failed to materialise, Sancho had a difficult start to the following season but eventually managed to rediscover his best form.
The 21-year-old helped Dortmund finish third in the Bundesliga and expectations were high when he completed a £73million move to United.
But he failed to hit the ground running at Old Trafford and didn’t register a goal or assist under Solskjaer, who was sacked by United in November.
The England international then started to improve following Ralf Rangnick’s arrival and won United’s Player of the Month award in February.
“They paid quite a few pounds for him in order to lure him away from Borussia Dortmund and if you pay that amount of money in a transfer fee for a player he should perform on this kind of level,” Rangnick said.
“At the end, they are all human beings. The mere fact he cost a lot of money does not mean that he is playing at that level to start with.
“He told me that of course it was a problem for him to get adjusted to the intensity of the league, to the physicality of the league.”
But Sancho hasn’t been able to maintain that form and was recently left out of Gaeth Southgate’s England squad for their friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
Using data from Whoscored, we’ve compared his Bundesliga stats in 2020-21 with his Premier League stats in 2021-22.
As the stats show, Sancho hasn’t been as productive during his debut season at United. He’s also averaging fewer key passes, less successful dribbles and fewer shots per 90 minutes.
