Made In Lagos By Wizkid Certified RIAA Gold; Sets Record As The First African Project To Earn This Score

Nigerian Grammy-winning singer, Wizkid (now Big WIZ) has scored a gold certification for his 2020 LP “Made In Lagos.”

According to a data presented by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the fourteen-track full length project has garnered over 500 thousand equivalent album sales in the United States of America since its worldwide debut in October of 2020. With this score, the globally acclaimed musician sets the record as the first African to receive gold certification for a full body of work.

Wizkid, however, is credited with multiple RIAA certifications and has sold 12 million units across all credit lines. His RIAA certified singles include “One Dance” featuring Drake (8x Platinum), “Come Closer” (Gold), “Essence” (2x Platinum), and “Brown Skin Girl” (Gold). Meanwhile, “Made In Lagos”, in January of 2022 earned BPI silver certification, after the album sold over 60,000 units in the UK.

“Made in Lagos” cemented Wizkid’s name as one of Nigeria’s greatest cultural ambassadors and placed him at the vanguard of a global Afrobeats wave after establishing his brand as an Afrobeats legend through his first three LPs, Superstar (2011), Ayo (2014), and Sounds From the Other Side (2017).

The album’s collaborations rope in the likes of Burna Boy, Ella Mai, Skepta, H.E.R., and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, among others. Released in 2021, the deluxe version adds four new songs to the mix: “Mood,” where he’s joined by rising Afrofusion singer Buju; “Anoti”; “Steady”; and a remix of his Tems collab “Essence” which also enlists Justin Bieber.
