An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to one of the main suspects in the rivalry gangs responsible for the deadly violence in Nima-Mamobi in January.
Ibrahim Hussain, or Kumodzi, the head of the “Kumodzi gang,” was granted bail along with three other suspects: Farouk Dawda, aka Omoni, Aziz Suleman, and Zakari Mohammed, aka Miller.
The four were each granted bail in the amount of GH80,000 with two sureties.
On Tuesday, their case was heard in front of Rosemary Baah Tosu, who presided over the court (Feb 15, 2022).
They denied the charges of plotting a riot with weapons, rioting with weapons, and inflicting injury to two others, Frimpong Boateng and Shaibu Abdul Razak.
They must report to the Nima police twice a week as part of their bail terms.
Meanwhile, Ali Awudi, aka Bomba, the head of the ‘Bombom gang,’ is still on the run.
Others who have been charged
On Tuesday, February 1, the court set bail at GH640,000 for eight individuals.
The accused have been charged with plotting to riot with weapons, rioting with weapons, and causing injury to two others, Frimpong Boateng and Shaibu Abdul Razak, who are reportedly undergoing treatment.
Abdul Gafaru Mahama, Atarouwa Bassam, Abdul Mumuni Gariba, Mohammed Saabi Barinu, Bashiru Ganiru, Illiasu Salim, Ibrahim Moro, and Issah Seidu are the eight members of the delegation.
The accused people are to re-appear on March 9, this year.
Background
On January 18, 2022, at 3 p.m., the police got information that a riot had broken out in Nima Gutter, with guns and other offensive weapons being used.
There was occasional firing on the streets of Nima as some young men brandishing pistols and other weapons, such as machetes and clubs, from either side sought to overcome one other, according to a video of the event that went viral.
According to preliminary police investigations, the violent disturbance was caused by a misunderstanding between two gangster groups based in Mamobi and Nima Gutter, respectively, the ‘Bombom group’ and the ‘Kumodzi group.’
A total of 12 expended shells were recovered from the area, and protesters vandalized a barbershop only a few meters away.
Three AAA live ammo, one empty pistol magazine, one live pistol bullet, a knife, and a machete were discovered during a check of the vandalized business.
A 53-year-old man was injured by a gunshot on his left shoulder as he was ready to drive away from the scene and was being treated at the 37 Military Hospital’s Emergency Ward.
Suleman and Moro, two of the suspects who had gone to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge, for treatment, were apprehended and taken to the Police Hospital, where they were treated and released under tight police supervision.
After being recognized by the police, three more people, Gariba, Barinu, and Ganiru, were apprehended at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, Ridge.
Suspects Salim and Seidu were also apprehended in their hideaway in Ashalajah, Accra, and a military uniform and pump-actionaction rifle were recovered from them.
Following police information, Dawda was apprehended from his hiding at Polo Park near Kotoka Airport on January 23 this year.
