The aftermath of shelling in Kharkiv

As we have been reporting, Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv was struck by Russian missiles at around 8am local time.

The Russian artillery hit the Kharkiv Region State Administration Building on Freedom Square. Residential areas were also struck in the attack.

Photographs now show the aftermath of the strikes, with debris and broken glass seen scattered around the outside of the administration building.

Oleg Synegubov, head of the Kharkiv region, said Moscow had launched Grad and cruise missiles on the city, but insisted Kharkiv’s defences are holding.

He said: “Such attacks are genocide of the Ukrainian people, a war crime against the civilian population!”

Mr Synegubov said it was too early to know the number of casualties.
