Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that over 500 names on government payroll have multiple identities.
According to Dr. Bawumia, these employees had different registration numbers attached to their names.
Speaking at the 2022 Internal Audit Agency Conference in Accra, the Vice President said: “We have found that there are 533 people on the Controller and Accountant General’s Department who have multiple identities. In all cases of multiple identities, the employees have more than one account with different employee numbers. Some have about three employee numbers.”
The Vice President had earlier revealed that an amount of over GH¢400 million has been lost to ghost names on the Social Security and National Insurance Trust SSNIT pension scheme and the National Service Scheme.
He insisted that an improved identification system would help deal with ghost names on the government payroll.
“It seems my Ghana card statement was misinterpreted. I want people to think about it critically. For the first time in our history, we have a unique identity system which is biometric, and so we can identify individuals.”
“With this, the case of ghost names on our public sector system will become a thing of the past.”
